...and for me, IKEA falls somewhere on that list. The artful room displays, the shelves and shelves of useless, useful apartment decor, the colorful kids section (makes me wanna be a kid again just so I can have one of those green beds with the leaf hanging over it), and the swedish meatballs! It's like a resort for the cool-decorating-storing-shelving-and-lighting obsessed...and of course, the teeny-tiny- apartment-organizing-genuises.
I say all of this to say--tomorrow marks the long-awaited grand opening of the new Red Hook Ikea. No more hitching the weekend-only bus from Port Authority to Joysee--and schleping your city-chic findings all the way back to Manhattan...ugh, how I hated sitting next to the lady who insisted on buying the flippy-floppy palm plant. Now, you can schlep on the subway, city bus, or water taxi (hmmm...sounds a lil risky to me). Get there early if you can--it's gonna be sheer chaos, but a little birdie tells me there will be free stuff for the early birds and eager beavers.
p.s. i think i just wrote a commercial.

I wasn't even checking for the Ikea Red Hook grand opening (until I read your commercial....HA!)
Water Taxis aren't as sketchy as they seem. I had to take one from work in Jersey City when the Path train was out! On a nice sunny day it's cool..and besides the one to Ikea is FREEEEEEE! I just may have to take part in their festivities! Thanks for the commercial~
glad i could be of service, Janelle. I'm really anxious to go to the new Ikea...just b/c it'll be the first time I've been to a tri-state Ikea without having to adhere to a special bus/shuttle schedule. I think i'll wait a couple weeks--for the crazed hype to die down slightly.
Red Hook...isn't that city featured in the Kevin Smith movies?
rashad, I think you're right...but i wonder if it's the same Red Hook. I thought they were in Jersey in his movies, but whatdoIknow? I do know that Red Hook is known as a 'dumping ground' for dead bodies...which makes it even cooler that they're an Ikea there now.
I remember back in the day when there were less than 10 IKEAs in the US. People use to come into my house when I was a child and say "where do you shop", and my parents would smile at each other knowingly because our house was a bunch of plywood sh*t. But pretty none-the-less! I love IKEA in the same way you do. It just makes a house happy. But I warn you about the openings. They suck and are not worth the effort. I went to the re-opening of the Potomac Mills IKEA. . . people were camped out fighting over free crap. Awful. In London, they opened one in Wood Green (a dodgy area of town) and my boyfriend and I comtemplated going. The next day when we read in the news that someone had been stabbed over a deeply discounted leather couch, we glanced at each other and sighed relief.
etoilee--OMG...i'm evil--I just LMAO at "someone had been stabbed over a deeply discounted leather couch," but on the same token--consider me forewarned. I have to be at work anyway...so no Ikea for me for a while. Plus, I need the dust to settle a bit first.
You're evil but so am I. . . I laughed about that for ages. Apparently they were offering 50 leather couches at 200 pounds each (a steal), people were clawing over them apparently one person would grab one end and the other person would grab the other side and they'd be shouting "mine! mine!" This was from an actual news report. My boyfriend and I high fived each other over the wise decision to skip it!
Ikea is a menace. And i mean that in a good way. And don't get me started on lingonberries and swedish meatballs!
Not to mention there are just so many cute things there for a decent price. I use ikea wares to augment my pricier furniture.
But about this water taxi...i'm intrigued. i've never heard of it before. It must be something unique to nyc.
wow - ikea in brooklyn? amazing
You know, I've never been to an IKEA. I know I should go at some point. Actually I need to go, if only to get some pant hangers.
